The Origin Of The IRONMAN Triathlon..
Posted by joefitness at 5:39 pm in Uncategorized

Hey , Folks, here’s the history of Ironman Triathlon as told to me:
(note I”m not the writer. I’m just the messenger. However, I’ve corrected many typo’s and grammar mistakes from the original published text)

‘From Unlikely Challenge to International Sensation’
While stationed near San Diego in the mid-1970’s. John Carter and wife Judy, participated in multi-sport workouts designed to break up the monotony of constant run training.

During an awards banquet in Hawaii running race, a lively discussion about the creation of a major endurance event in Hawaii occurred. To challenge athletes who had already seen success at a local biathlon (swim/run), the first annual Hawaiian IRON MAN Triathlon was born.

As the conversation continued, Collins began playing with the idea of combining the three toughest endurance races on the island into one race. He decided to issue a challenge.  He proposed tying the 2.4 mile Wakiki Roughwater Swim with 112-miles of the Around=Oahu Bike Race(originally a two-day event and 11 miles), followed by a 26.2 mile run on the same course as the Honolulu Marathon.

The event was unveiled at the Wakiki Swim Club Awards Banquet in the late 1977. ” The gun will off at about 7am , the clock will keep running and whoever finishes first we’ll call Ironman, ” Collins recalls.

On February 18, 1978, 15 competitors, including Collins, came to the shores of Wakiki to take on the Ironman challenge. Prior to racing each received three sheets of paper listing a few rules and a course description. Handwritten on the last page was the exhortation. ” Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles! Brag the rest of your life!”

Who would have predicted this exchange of bravado would be the foundation for what is now the world’s most recognized endurance event and the global benchmark for testing one’s personal limits?

Judy Collins, who originally planned to participate in the inaugural event, was forced to withdraw just days before. John Collins and 11 others finished the entire course. Gordon Haller, a taxi cab driver and fitness enthusiast, crossed the finish line first in 11 hours, 46 minutes and 58 seconds to become the ” original” Ironman. Collins finished the race in a little over 17 hours.

Having lost only $25 on that first rave, Collins agreed to organize a second event in 1979. Unfortunately, bad weather postponed the race for a day, and more than half the field dropped out; this left only 15 to race for the second straight year. Among the remaining 15 athletes was Lyn Lemaire, a cyclist from Boston, Mass. The first female finisher maintained second place for much of the race before finishing fifth overall. The winning times of 11:15:46 posted by Californian Tom Warren, improved upon Haller’s first-year mark, and Warren became a minor celebrity when he and the race received exposure in Sports Illustrated.**

This larger -than life depiction of the race in Sports Illustrated generated what Collins remembers as a ” shoe box full of hundreds of letters from athletes around the world who wanted to do the race.” ABC Sports called Collins asking his permission to film the 1980 event. Collins agreed as long as ABC brought its own crew and the filming bore him no expense. **

Ironically, Collins transferred out of Hawaii just as his baby hit the big time in 1980. He turned the event over to the owner of a local health club. No money changed hands, but Collins did receive assurance that he or his family could race for free any year they wanted, and that “they would save a few racing spots for the ‘ordinary man, ‘ because these were type of individuals who created the race.

In 1981, the race was moved from Oahu to the harsh, barren and less congested field of Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island.

Along the Kona Coast, black lava rock dominates the panorama. Against this backdrop, athletes would cover 140.6 miles by sea, bike and foot while battling “ho’ o mumuku” crosswinds of 45 mph, 95 degree temperatures and a scorching sun. The new Ironman Triathlon became the benchmark against which all extreme sporting challenges would be measured.

ABC’s broadcasts on ” Wide World of Sport” in 1980 and 1981 ** continued to generate interest from athletes, but Ironman’s signatures moment would come the following year.

With the men’s championship title already claimed, ABC’s camera’s zeroed in on the women’s leaders. A college student from San Diego, Julie Moss’ lifeguarding background helped her stay among the early women’s leaders. After a strong nike, she found herself with a big lead in the run. Her energy levels started to dip in the last five miles, however, and another San Diego competitor, Kathleen McCartney, began to cut into Moss’ lead.

Moss managed to hang on, sometimes appearing like a punch-drunk fighter as he moved toward the finish line. But with a little more than 20  yards to go, her legs gave out and she fell to the ground. She attempted to get up, but her legs wouldn’t hold her. Rather than give up, she crawled. Race officials and spectators gathered around her, visibly concerned for her well being, as well as amazed by her courage. Although, McCartney passed he, Moss won the hearts of those on-hand and millions who later saw her determined effort on television. ABC’’s Jim McKay among the most experienced sports broadcaster in history, called it the most inspiring sports moment he had ever witnessed.

Instantly, competing in the Ironman became such a hot ticket that organizers instituted a qualifying system to the field management.

By any measure, the Ironman presents the ultimate test of body, mind and spirit for the professional and amateur athletes alike, As the Ironman Triathlon has emerged into the mainstream, the experience continues to transcend the pure sense of sports, centering on the dedication, courage and perseverance exhibited by athletes who demonstrate the Ironman mantra that “ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.”tm

“Swim 2.4 miles, Bike 112 miles, Run 26.2 miles. Brag the rest of your life. -John Collins, Founder

What does IRONMAN eat…
Posted by joefitness at 8:48 pm in Uncategorized

Hey, Y’all,

100’s of you around NY to the Middle East have asked me what does a world class USA Triathlon Coach, ChiRunning Ambassador , Most Eligable Bachelor in NY eat. AS he prepares for the Ironman Canada race 8/29/10:

So, here’s the secret:
5am I ‘drink’ my vitamins.
I take ISOTONIX to start day with a ‘kick’ and get all of my nutrients i that I miss with the ‘food’ we get here in the US. Since it’s isotonic, 93-100% of what is in the supplement gets absorbed. ‘iso’ mean same, tonic means pressure. So, this liquid vitamin with antioxidents gives best start to the day. Rarely do I get sick!

5 minutes later I have:
1 piece of fruit: orange, grapefruit or berries

On days I train :
I drink TORCH HYDRATE drink during the bike or run.

I drink Pre-Burn to optimize my workout. Which is usually as follows: 1 hour of one of the following :Bike, or swim or swim
I take CO -Q 10 to promote exercise performance and heart function by strengthening the heart muscle.

I drink TORCH HYDRATE drink during the bike or r
To be sure I rehydrate my body during exercise AND this stuff  doesn’t leave that heavy sugary feeling of the ‘major’ brands out there.

8am  meal
4-6 egg whites with Veggies: peppers and greens, or buckwheat/protein pancakes homemade or from ReCharge Grill on 2nd ave and 75th st
Water

1 hour later at 9am:
I take COmplete Greens powder or tablets to be sure I’m getting 8 servings/full day supply of greens per day.
I take Cucumin Extreme to support healthy liver function.
Water

11 am ‘Snack Banana, almonds or almond butter sandwich(using multi grain bread or Brown rice cakes.
I then take OMEGA 3 for heart health and decreasing of inflammation that can be brought on by fructose, and white flour. That’s in most foods.

3pm Big salad with fish or grilled white meat chicken. Dressing on side or lemon juice.
Water

6pm Protien Shake ; TORCH AFTER BURN( high calorie) or TRANSITIONS ( low calorie)
with strawberries, blueberries which helps to keep my energy up , assists in muscle repair and keeps my body fat under 10%
8:30pm Fish or turkey or bison with steamed veggies and sweet potatoes.

Water or occasional diet soda(which fulfills my soda vice)

11pm SECRETAGOGUE to help increase the production and secretion of my body’s own natural human growth hormone and promote lean muscle mass.

This plan is my most current plan. It’s fool proof. It goes up against the best of the best. AND wins!

I’ll be updating this plan, as I update my workouts and matching my training and sleep cycles.

Love and Chi!

Last night along the Corniche(Beach road similar to Jersey Shore), with the heat of this formally desert area(now metropolitan-with a beach) he relaxed and aligned his way to his longest distance ever.

Occasionally, he had to refocus his breathe and his yChi(his eye gaze). The eyes are the window to the soul, and the SOLE in this case. So, he recognized when he was thinking about work stress. Then got present to his yChi and got back on track.

He ended with the ChiRunning energy flowing body looseners. Which have been clinically proven to be the most effective pre and post run or race warm-up and cool down. While reducing and even eliminating ANY chance of injury. When done correctly.

Majed, who has an occasional labral stiffness and knee tweak, had nothing to report. Other then the feeling on accomplishment and joy. He’s now on to his next chi event. He’s considering the Abudhabi Triathlon in March.

Go, MAJED!

Hey, Chidudes and ChiDudettes,

Thank you all for your great support! On August 31st, I went online for 50 available spots that ’sometimes’ go online for this race. IT was so nerve racking/chichallenging. I had my coaching clients from TMLP videoing me going online on my iphone. Only to hear read out loud. Please check again in a little while if spots for race become available. After about 2 hours, I checked one last time. The site read…”Register Now”. So, I made a big announcement that spots were available. The only glitch now was to register using an iphone. For those that don’t use one, this is notorious for making typing mistakes , And, in a race that cost $600 just to fill out the application, hoping you get in. It’s an even bigger risk. The shocker was how this was meant to be. I made no typo’s and took about 8 minutes to register. Once the credit card went through, the screen said “you will get an email if you’re confirmed for this race”. So, still nervously, I went out to lunch with the TMLPer’s. En route to find a place in Portland, Oregonthat makes breakfast all day. Finally, I checked messages. CONFIRMATION!!!! I’m now officially in. I played the Ozzy Osbourne Ironman song on my phone.

I’m totally psyched. Been preparing my year of training ever since that day. From now until end of November will base creating the base/foundation for the next year. In order to compete and complete the Ironman in under 13 hours. Knocking off 3 hours with chi and ease.

Stay tuned, for ongoing updates as I play /work to becoming a 2-time ironman.

Thank you all for your chi , love and support!

Thank you.

You truly are my heroes.

I’m glad you all enjoyed the event.

Emily, my friend and client, whom this event was created for( Actually, it was her mom who has Spastic Parapeligia.) has a few words of gratitude for you all…

I just wanted to thank everyone again for coming to the Chi Running Clinic on Saturday.  It was really great seeing everyone take their first steps as stronger runners, while you helped provide crucial research funding to help others start to take steps of their own.  I loved seeing eyes light up when a new point would register, and everyone looked excited to run after we were done!
